Skin is generally classified into one of four categories: Normal, Dry, Oily, and Combination, but you can also have sensitive skin. Your skin type can also change as you age, so it’s important to reassess your skin often. So how do you know what type of skin you have? Here are the four categories broken down.
Oily Skin:
Oily skin tends to be shiny with enlarged pores, and is prone to blackheads and blemishes.
To care for oily skin, be sure to cleanse your face no more than twice a day. Opt for oil-free sunscreen and don’t pick, pop or squeeze pimples. Be sure to read labels and opt for noncomedogenic products to keep your pores from clogging.
Combination Skin:
This skin type has medium pores, a smooth and even apearance and healthy color. You may tend to have dryness on the cheeks with an oily t-zone.
To care for combination skin, remember that you may have to treat different parts of your face slightly different. You may need to use a mild cleanser and moisturizer on the cheeks, while you use an anti-acne product on the t-zone.
Dry Skin:
Dry skin feels tight, especially after cleansing. You have a tendency towards fine wrinkles, flaking and red patches. Dry skin has almost invisible pores with a dull complexion.
To care for dry skin, use a gentle soap-free cleanser and apply moisturizer adequately.
Normal Skin:
Normal skin is not too dry and not too oily. You will have a radiant complexion with barely visible pores.
To care for normal skin, be sure to use your facial sunscreen daily, with an SPF of at least 30.
Sensitive Skin:
You may have sensitive skin for a variety of reasons, but it’s often in response to skincare products. You can experience redness, itching, burning and dryness. Be sure to find out what your triggers are and avoid them.
No matter what type of skin you have, be sure to always wear your facial sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Also be sure to stay hydrated, wash your skin everyday, and never wear makeup to bed.
